Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series has been widely praised for its time-traveling romance between Claire Beauchamp and Jamie Fraser. However, the book series -- which has also been adapted for TV via Starz -- has some glaring flaws.Perhaps most prominent is the positioning of Captain Jack Randall, a queer man, as a violent and predatory villain who haunts the characters for years.

In Outlander Season 2, we found out that Black Jack Randall wasn’t a direct ancestor of Frank Randall, despite Frank’s beliefs. Mary Hawkins’ baby was that of Alex Randall, with her and Jack only marrying to ensure Mary was provided for after Alex’s death. But that didn’t make Mary and Black Jack Randall’s wedding valid. In Outlander (2014), Menzies played the character, Black Jack Randall, who had long hair, requiring Menzies to have to don a long wig on set. He discussed his experience saying it was a miserable one. The show is depicting a gentler kind of rape than what Jamie endured at the hands of Black Jack Randall, but it's still a violation. Outlander is never, ever subtle, and it’s crystal clear Only Black Jack Randall remains, receiving a close shave (his face, pervs) from a minion. Claire has a brief flashback to shaving Frank, as he submits to her ministrations, bland and pale-chested. Outlander is a televised airport-novel cover: a pearl-clutching, bodice-ripping, ab-rippling romance. The Starz drama is also, in no particular order of significance, a period piece, a fantasy, a Outlander is no different. We have been oft reminded of Claire’s womanly vulnerability in a world ruled by men. (See all television shows always.) The final episode of the first half of the season reveled in Claire’s vulnerability at the hands of Black Jack Randall.

Jack Randall isn’t a character, he’s a characature, which is a shame. Gabaldon seems to continually get stuck in the worst tropes of fanfiction; the villain isn’t even human anymore, he’s

However, Randall was mostly portrayed as gay throughout the series. He raped two men and even failed to get aroused when with Jenny. Why would he agree to marry Mary? “Outlander” doesn’t demonize anyone for having that predilection, but it does show how damaging it is for Jack to impose his will on unwilling, fearful and non-consenting people. “Lallybroch” leads us to believe that Jack is homosexual, which is why he wanted Jamie’s sister Jenny (Laura Donnelly) to turn her face away from him when he attempted to rape her.
